Supportive Services

Individuals with sickle cell disease can have psychosocial problems that could be resolved more efficiently with the appropriate assistance. As a result, the Foundation offers a number of supportive services for persons with sickle cell disease and their families.

  • Teen Support Group
This is a self-help group for individuals with sickle cell disease and their families, and is designed to provide emotional support within the group, share information with other clients and families, give encouragement to others within the group, share anxieties and joys, and plan events of group interest such as parties, trips, and cookouts.

  • Parent/Child Support Group
This is a self-help group for individuals with sickle cell disease and their families, and is designed to provide emotional support within the group, share information with other clients and families, give encouragement to others within the group, share anxieties and joys, and plan events of group interest such as parties, trips, and cookouts. This group meets on the fourth Tuesday bi-monthly.

  • Summer Camp
Summer Camp is held annually at Camp ASCCA, an Easter Seals camp located in Jackson Gap, Alabama. All campers must be at least five years old and have sickle cell disease.

  • Scholarship Fund
The Foundation's Thomas (Boss) Calhoun Scholarship Fund awards five hundred dollars to each client, with sickle cell anemia in our service area, who has completed high school and wishes to further his/her education. The applicant must be accepted at an accredited college, university, junior college, or vocational school. These first-year scholarships are awarded yearly.

  • Tutorial Program
The tutorial program is designed to promote academic success for persons with sickle cell disease.

  • Medical Referrals
Medical referrals are made with sickle cell clients in need of medical services.

  • Social Service Referrals
Clients are linked with community resource agencies when special assistance is needed, such as housing, food, utilities, medicine, etc.

  • Pharmacy Referrals
The Association will purchase medication for clients on an emergency basis.

  • Transportation Assistance
Transportation is available for sickle cell patients to and from medical or social services on an emergency basis (if no other transportation is available to the patient).
